Maria Altman (Mirren), an aging Jewish woman who fled Austria in her youth to escape the Nazi occupation, fights to reclaim her family's artwork in this engrossing true story. Among the art looted by the Third Reich is a 1907 painting of her Aunt Adele by the artist Gustav Klimt. Determined to set things right, Altmann sues the Austrian government and, aided by a young inexperienced lawyer (Reynolds), they set out the reclaim the painting, "The Woman in Gold," a painting then considered an Austrian national treasure. This is a film about loss, betrayal, and national guilt.

NEWTOWN FILM FESTIVAL: Opening Night Shorts and Lake Michigan in a Dugout

Screenings begin 6 pm (shorts), documentary begins at 7.

Opening night of inaugural Newtown Film Festival (a Newtown Arts Festival event), which continues to September 20, will offer shorts, then documentary that follows two young women chasing their dream of journeying around Lake Michigan in a handmade dugout sailing canoe; all screenings free of charge.
